Once common misconception about retractable awnings is that they can be used on a permanent basis, and only need to be retracted in the event of a hurricane.
Retractable awnings are solely designed to be temporary shade structures. They are not designed to support a wind, rain, or snow load. Many people do use retractable awnings on a permanent or semi-permanent basis, but this causes excessive wear on the frame and cover.
Additionally, use of retractable awnings in adverse weather conditions could lead to property damage or personal injury.
In most cases, rinsing your awning with clean water once quarterly will help keep it clean.

There are many methods of applying graphics to awning covers. This usually depends on the fabric. See our Signs and Graphics section for more information.
It is sometimes possible to repair a small rip in awning fabric if the cover is clean and the rip does not cross any seams/stitching. Old covers can also sometimes be re-sewn, but it is generally more cost-effective to purchase a new awning cover.

Without an Awning With an Awning
Although it is always safer to remove an awning before a hurricane, it is not imperative. Our awnings are built using welded aluminum frames, and our covers are tightly fastened to them. This allows them to withstand a wind load exceeding 130mph.

Permanent fabric awning covers typically last 5-7 years before they need to be replaced, but they can last longer than that. Retractable awning covers typically last 7-10 years if properly used and taken care of. This is primarily determined by sun, wind, and rain exposure. Both permanent and retractable awning frames can be re-covered multiple times.
